Flood Preparedness & Response

The Western PA Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) met at Christian Associates today, March 10, with representatives of Allegheny, Fayette and Greene County Emergency Management Services.

There will be flooding! Temperature, the rate of the melt of the snow pack and the amount of rains will determine the locations and severity of the flooding.

Prepare now…here’s how!

  1. Get a Kit of emergency supplies. Recommended supplies to include in a basic kit:
    • Water one gallon per person per day, for drinking and sanitation
    • Non-perishable food, at least a three-day supply
    • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • First aid kit
    • Whistle to signal for help
    • Filter mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
    • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
    • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
    • Manual can opener if kit contains canned food
    • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
    • Important family documents
    • Items for unique family needs such as daily prescription medications, infant formula or diapers
  2. In flood prone areas, expect utilities to be interrupted, water, sewer, electricity and natural gas.
  3. Emergency shelters will be opened in flooded areas. Contact your local municipality for locations.
  4. Beginning Saturday a Public Inquiry Line will be operational.

Call 412-383-4999 with questions about the location of shelters or with non-emergency needs.

Representatives of the WPA VOAD will assist in staffing the Emergency Operations Center beginning on Saturday, March 13.  A conference call or a face-to-face meeting will be convened early next week (March 14-20) to assess the need for volunteers, supplies and financial resources for clean-up as waters recede and for long term recovery needs.  Call Pastor Don Green, Executive Director, Christian Associates of SW PA,  at 412-688-9070 or 412-302-1227 with questions.
