MISSION

Sojourner House is a faith based residential and treatment program for mothers and their children to help break the intergenerational cycle of addiction.

CURRENT PROGRAMS

As a "women with children" facility, we offer an intensive program that recognizes the unique pressures of maternal addiction. Residents stay six months while they learn to reclaim their lives. A unique feature is that families live in their own apartments with services available on site.

Our three-pronged approach strengthens women through Drug and Alcohol counseling, parent education and life skills training. Voluntary bible study and church/congregation attendance is encouraged; a class in spirituality is mandated. Counseling includes individual and group counseling and attendance at Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. Parenting services include opportunities to learn about childhood development, play and successful parenting skills. We have numerous community partnerships, including Every Child, Alliance for Infants, and Allegheny County Intermediate Unit.

Each mom can have 1-3 children (to age 12) live here. Because we are interested in breaking the intergenerational cycle of addiction, there are many services geared to youngsters. Infants and pre-school children go to our weekday Play Care Center. After-school services include homework tutoring, Reading Club, Drug and Alcohol prevention group, and recreational outlets.

HISTORY

PROFESSIONAL STAFF

Sojourner House, a licensed Drug and Alcohol residential program, hires staff in accordance with Pennsylvania licensing guidelines. Their professional backgrounds include addictions counseling, psychology, and childhood development. A Clinical Supervisor, a Medical Director, and other consultants provide supervision.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONGREGATIONAL OR INDIVIDUAL INVOLVEMENT

We have many volunteers and welcome those who can help either on a regular basis or through special enrichment activities. Volunteers are most needed in the front Office and the Play Center. Congregations are invited to become involved through our "Adopt an Apartment" program, a "Youth Day of Caring," or in spiritual enhancement partnerships. Play and educational supplies, kitchen and small gift items, store vouchers and food donations are always appreciated.
