MISSION

Lydia’s Place Inc. is a faith-based, non-profit organization which seeks to meet the holistic needs of incarcerated women both while they are in prison and after their release. It provides a continuum of caring services to women –from jail through transition to stability –as well as programs for the children of incarcerated women and their caregivers. Its mission is to reduce the number of female repeat offenders, to restore broken families, and to help women rebuild their lives after incarceration.


CURRENT PROGRAMS

Lydia’s Place provides a number of services in both the Allegheny County Jail and in the community.

In- Jail the staff and volunteers provide:

• Parenting Classes
• Life Skills Classes
• A 12 week Re-Entry Program where women meet with community experts who share knowledge and teach skills that help women change their destructive behavior patterns.
• A Pre-Natal Program for women in the jail’s infirmary who are pregnant
• Mentoring volunteers who offer one-to-one friendship and guidance in jail to incarcerated women and follow them into aftercare.

Aftercare from the office provides:

• Case Management Program that provides counseling and referral efforts
• Sisters in Support (S.I.S.) group, which is a forum for women to exchange fears, talents, challenges, and solve problems. Children of the women in S.I.S. can participate in an activity-based group held simultaneously
• Monthly fun activities for mothers, children and children's caretakers that include seasonal weekend retreats

For Children and Caregivers:

• Coordination of Allegheny County Jail Activity Center which prepares children to visit with their incarcerated parents and helps the children's caretakers find information about and referral to local, social service agencies.
• Family Reunification Enhancement Effort, which provides support to the children of incarcerated mothers and their caregivers with the goal of reuniting families.
• A Mother’s Voice, a storybook project that allows incarcerated mothers to read and tape record stories, which are then sent to their children.
