MISSION

To empower families and youth to live spiritually healthy and productive lives through the practical application of the Word of God by instilling Christian life skills, mentoring, training, nurturing, networking with churches and community groups.


CURRENT PROGRAMS

• YALT - Young Adult Leadership Training program - training youth ages 16-26 to mentor younger youth and grow in their capacity to be personally and spiritually mature and make a contribution to their community.
• LSIA - Life Skills in Action - youth ages 9-13 are mentored by older youth in the arts and other areas of service to their community that they self-select based in their interests and gifts.
• LSMP - Life Skills Mentoring Program - churches are equipped and trained to operate mentoring programs with the youth of their congregations and community.
• PAEP - Positive Alternatives Entrepreneurial Program - youth are mentored and guided in developing their academic skills, life skills and entrepreneurial skills as a deterrent to the trouble and temptation that could take them in a negative direction.
• Parent Encouragement Program - A parent support group to encourage parents around the effective nurture of their children.
• Resource Library - materials to assist residents of the community in developing the life skills to live into their God - given potential.

HISTORY

After viewing the 1986 TV documentary, “The Vanishing Black Family,” Christian Life Skills was developed to ameliorate systemic and other issues facing black families and youth. It has linkages with the Metro Urban Institute of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute and other well established ministries in the city to achieve its mission through collaborative efforts more effectively.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONGREGATIONAL OR INDIVIDUAL INVOLVEMENT

Volunteers are always needed for one hour per year or more to assist in maintaining the resource library, helping with mailings, special events, tutoring, mentoring, general clerical work, etc. Also, inviting the entrepreneurial program to attend bazaars will help the youth in our program. Drivers are also needed.


INFORMATIONAL PROGRAMS AVAILABLE

Speakers are available on a variety of subjects and to fill the pulpit.
